ONLINE COUNSELING

My Professional Requirements

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Louisiana and my license to counsel is overseen by the Louisiana State LPC Board.  The Board requires that, as a Louisiana counselor who provides online counseling , I meet specific guidelines. They are:

  • Must be licensed in Louisiana. I have been licensed in Louisiana since 2006.
  • Must be eligible for licensure in the state where the client is located. I will verify with your state once you contact me for services.
  • Must have been practicing for at least one year. I have been practicing for 25 years, since 1996 in Michigan prior to becoming licensed in Louisiana in 2006.
  • Completed 9 hours of professional training in offering online therapy, which I completed in 2020.

How Online Counseling is Conducted

Approved online counseling is face-to-face, real-time using video conference software (I use doxy.me). We must be online at the same time and able to see and hear each other. Text, e-mail, fax, messaging, etc. are not acceptable. These requirements are determined by federal and state laws and by the insurance companies.  I currently conduct individual, couple, and group counseling online. Groups are limited to four individuals.

How to Determine if Online Counseling is Right For You

Some things can help you determine whether online counseling is a good fit for you:

  1. If you have the ability to feel personally connected to someone when meeting them online.
  2. If you have issues such as agoraphobia, depression, fear of germs in public places, fear of riding in cars, fear for your physical safety, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that make it difficult for you to leave your home.
  3. If you live in a rural or isolated area with limited access to counselors.
  4. If you lack transportation.
  5. If you lack child care or are the primary caretaker of others that prevents you from being away from home for very long.
  6. If you want to protect your privacy so that people do not see you entering and exiting a counseling center.
  7. If you have a physical illness or limitations that make it difficult for you to get out.

How to Begin Online Counseling

  1. Contact me either by e-mail at dvchange@outlook.com or telephone at 225/253-9635 for a free consultation.  This consultation will give you a sense of whether we would be a good fit to work together and give me a chance to assess whether I have the needed training, knowledge, and experience to be helpful to you. If I do not, I will help you find someone who can assist you.
  2. If you have insurance, check your provider directory to determine if I am in network with them. You should also check to see if your insurance covers online counseling, referred to as telehealth or telemental health by the insurance companies. See my page of the insurances I accept.
  3. If you do not have insurance, you will pay by credit/debit card at the time of your online appointment. Health Savings Account cards are also accepted.
  4. I will e-mail the required HIPAA consents and notices for your signature after our free consultation and before our first appointment.
  5. I will e-mail or text the video conference call link to you with directions on how to access it. I currently use doxy.me for individual and group counseling.
